National event in support of a UNGA resolution to Ban FGM worldwide

Dakar, Senegal, 20 December 2011

On 19-21 December 2011, a national event in support of the Ban FGM Campaign was organized in Dakar, Senegal, by the Network of Parliamentarians for Population and Development and the NGO La Palabre, in cooperation with No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and the Ban FGM Coalition.

The meeting was part of the six national events to take place in African countries to advocate for the adoption of a resolution to ban female genital mutilation worldwide at the sixty-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The meeting aimed to promote and inform parliamentarians, political leaders and civil society (many of whom participated in the Interparliamentary Conference in Dakar) on the progress of the BanFGM Campaign, as well as increasing technical assistance to parliamentarians and activists to promote their contribution, through political mobilization in order to consolidate Senegal’s position in favor of a clearly and explicitly worded Resolution banning FGM worldwide and creating an opportunity to network and strengthen the country's commitment to the
elimination of FGM.

Participants in the meeting included H.E. Awa Ndiaye, Minister of State for Culture and Gender, Mrs Soukeye Gueye, Director of the Family Section of the Ministry of Family and Women’s organizations, Hon. Elhadj Malick Diop, President of the Network of Parliamentarians for Population and Development, Ms. Khady Koita, President of La Palabre, Mrs Maguette Sy, the President of COSIPRAT, Alvilda Jablonko, Coordinator of the FGM Program of NPWJ, Mr. Gallo Kebe, representing the regional office of UNFPA, Dr. Homayoun Madjrouch, of SANOFI Pasteur, Dr. Djibril Diallo, ONUSIDA, and Dr. Domenico Fornara, of the Italian Embassy.
