Tunisia: Reinforcing media capacity in the field of Transitional Justice

 
On 22-23 November 2012, the Al-Kawakibi Democracy Transition Centre (KADEM) and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), in partnership with No Peace Without Justice, organised in Keiruan, Tunisia, a training on reinforcing media capacity in the field of transitional justice.
 
The two-day activity, which was held within the framework of the Transitional Justice Academy, brought together 24 professionals from printed journals, the radio and reporters from the biggest Tunisian television channels, as well as bloggers, freelance journalists and filmmakers.
 
The main objective of this training was to deepen participants’ knowledge in the field of transitional justice and promote their understanding of the issues, which will ensure better reporting. The two-day training offered a good occasion to clarify several misconceptions about transitional justice and allowed for discussions on substantive issues related to the transition to democracy in general in Tunisia.
 
Mr Beligh Abassi, judge of the Court of First Instance in Tunis, and Prof. Mouna Tabei, constitutional law expert and member of the Commission on the Transitional Justice National Dialogue conducted the training. The two trainers are members of the Tunisian Group on Transitional Justice and have participated in several activities under the Transitional Justice Academy. Mr Marwan Maalouf, Director of the Regional Office in Tunis of IWPR, intervened to cover the session on the role of media for the success of the transitional justice process.
