Volunteer Researchers
No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) Short‑Term Volunteer Researcher Program, aims specifically at providing graduate (and, exceptionally, final‑year undergraduate) students in relevant disciplines with practical experience in working on human rights and international legal issues. The volunteer research positions would last for a minimum of three months, for approximately 40 hours a week, and would be undertaken primarily within NPWJ’s Brussels office.
NPWJ will assign work to volunteer researchers in NPWJ’s program areas, taking into account also the interests of the individual volunteer researcher. Volunteer researchers can expect to undertake work in all thematic areas of interest to NPWJ. Work will include sharing administrative tasks with other NPWJ staff members, but a guaranteed portion of volunteer researchers’ time would be spent on substantive program work, such as maintaining external contacts, research and drafting of concept or position papers in relation to various NPWJ policy initiatives. NPWJ will provide full support and supervision by a senior staff member.
In addition to the experienced gained in working side-by-side with NPWJ staff, volunteer researchers will benefit from assisting in the organisation and attending the “NPWJ Brown-Bag Series”, consisting of bi-monthly lectures and seminars by prominent speakers and experts in a subject within the sphere of NPWJ’s activities. In the normal course of events, each volunteer researcher would be part of at least six such lectures.
For students able to obtain credit towards their degree for their work undertaken during the program, NPWJ will provide a written assessment of the work undertaken at the conclusion of the program, together with such other assessment documents as may be required by the University for the purposes of the student obtaining such credit. All volunteer researchers will also be expected to prepare a detailed report on the work they have undertaken during their research period at NPWJ, including a structured assessment of NPWJ’s volunteer research program.
As these short-term research positions are unpaid, volunteer researchers will be required to find an external sponsor, normally their University, to fund their stay in Brussels. A declaration of sponsorship for an external source is normally required; exceptionally, a declaration by the volunteer researcher that they will be able to cover their cost of living in Brussels for the duration of the program could be sufficient. NPWJ will not provide travel or living expenses unless travel is undertaken for specific missions for and on behalf of NPWJ.
For further information on the selection process, please
contact NPWJ enclosing a Curriculum Vitae, the names and email addresses of academic or professional referees and a sample of writing such as an essay or publication on an appropriate topic, in English or in French.
