Preparatory Seminars for the Freetown Seminar on Implementation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, 11-15 December 2006
|
Preparatory seminars organised by Manifesto 99 throughout Sierra Leone ensured participation from all parts of the country. These seminars, with a total of 250 participants from all sectors of Sierra Leone society, were designed so as to maximise the spread of information and discussion about international criminal justice, in particular about the Rome Statute and the needs for domestic implementation, and to provide the opportunity to select participants for the seminar focusing on implementation of the Rome Statute on 11‑15 December. To ensure the widest possible participation, the preparatory workshops highlighted comparisons between the International Criminal Court and the Special Court for Sierra Leone, given that this is of particular interest in Sierra Leone since the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor is to be tried by the SCSL at the ICC premises in The Hague, about which many Sierra Leoneans have strong feelings.
