"Beyond Covid-19: Defending Human Rights and Environment in Latin America"

Live stream on Thursday 30 July 2020, at 17.00 GMT+1 (Brussels time) with English subtitles.

This week's "Beyond COVID-19" broadcast is entitled “Defending Human Rights and environment in Latin America". The impact on Covid-19 in different countries has affected a lot of aspects regarding social, political and health issues. The pandemic has put on the table the dilemma of choosing between health and the economy, and the protection of Human and Environmental Rights has not been the focus in some regions. Particularly, in Latin America it turns out to be a bigger problem, especially for indigenous communities which have been fighting for the protection of their territories. During this episode, a pool of activists and international experts in the field of human and environmental rights and international justice will address issues around the defence of human and environmental rights, international mechanisms of justice, the recognition of the rights of the nature, the fight against impunity for environmental and human rights violations, the importance of natural resources and the territory for indigenous communities, and other issues. From different perspectives and backgrounds, they will also discuss how the Covid-19 is reflecting the lack of commitment by governments in Latin America in the protection of human rights, the Amazonia, natural resources and the environment.

Speakers of the panel discussion, to be moderated by Michelle Reyes, International Justice Consultant and Lecturer of International Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, includes: Jorge Acero, Senior Attorney, Amazon Frontlines; Luz Eida Julicué, Nasa Indigenous Leader and Human Rights Defender; Rodrigo Mundaca, Secretary General of the Movement for the Protection of Access to Water, for Land Rights and for Environmental Protection (MODATIMA); Verónica Gómez, Director, Global Campus of Human Rights Latin America.
