Transgender woman from Guatemala granted asylum in U.S.

A judge on Tuesday granted asylum to a transgender woman who fled persecution in Guatemala. The trans woman — who the Southern Poverty Law Center represents — in a court filing said she moved to Guatemala City, the country’s capital and largest city, when she was 17-years-old to “avoid further bullying, harassment and discrimination” she said she experienced in her hometown. The trans woman — who the Southern Poverty Law Center has not identified by name — said the laboratory for which she worked after moving to Guatemala City fired her because of her sexual orientation.She started working with a Guatemalan trans advocacy group and said she “experimented with dressing as a woman” a year after moving to Guatemala City. The trans woman said she began injecting herself with hormones and took birth control pills in order to begin her transition, but she stopped because of the side effects.

Victory for Gender Identity in Botswana

In a legal first for Botswana, the country’s High Court has ruled that a transgender man should be allowed to hold official documents that reflect his gender identity. The judgment is a huge victory for transgender people in Botswana, who face considerable challenges when their gender identity is not reflected in official papers. The applicant who brought the case was assigned female at birth, but self-identifies as a man. The court found that by refusing to change the man’s gender on his identity document, Botswana’s Registrar of National Registration had violated several of his basic human rights.

Marriage equality poll shows 77% have now voted in postal survey

A new poll finds that 77% of enrolled Australians have already returned their marriage law postal survey forms, a development that may take the heat out of the campaign. The poll, conducted for the Equality Campaign by Newgate Research, found that, in addition to the overall turnout, about 69% of enrolled 18- to 24-year-olds had voted and posted their forms.

Human rights groups urge Egypt to halt crackdown on LGBT people after rainbow flag waved at concert

Two international rights groups called on Egyptian authorities on Saturday to halt their crackdown on people suspected of homosexuality following the waving of the LGBT rainbow flag at a recent concert in Cairo.  Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International also urged Egypt, a majority Muslim country of some 95 million people, to call off the anal examination of people detained on suspicion of homosexuality to determine whether they were engaged in same-sex sexual relations.
