Afghanistan: Girls Struggle for an Education

Afghan government and international donor efforts since 2001 to educate girls have significantly faltered in recent years, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today. Sixteen years after the US-led military intervention in Afghanistan ousted the Taliban, an estimated two-thirds of Afghan girls do not attend school.

How improving childcare brings benefits for everyone

There are 679 million children younger than five years of age in the world today—almost one in 10 of the world’s population. Who looks after these children when parents go out to work, and what are we missing when we do not consider this point? Classically it is the mother who provides a solution, but to reconcile care needs with the need to earn a living, and in the absence of affordable childcare services, she may be forced to leave the labour force altogether or take on lower-quality, lower-paid jobs. Both governments and the private sector have significant and different roles to play in changing this scenario, and both need to be sensitively maximized to resolve the current situation.

EWL deeply concerned about the discussion to limit access to abortion in Lithuania

 [Brussels, 11 october 2017] The European Women’s Lobby, EWL, has sent a letter to the Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Lithuanian Parliament and other relevant Lithuanian authorities expressing its deep concern about the legislative discussions in the Lithuanian Parliament to restrict access to abortion and maternal health. The Lithuanian Parliament is discussing a draft law registered in 2013 which proposes to restrict access to safe and legal abortion and which will have a direct detrimental impact on women’s rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights in the country. In our letter, the EWL urges the Members of the Lithuanian Parliament to take urgent action to defeat this draft law, as it would have devastating consequences on women’s lives and health, in addition to depriving women of their fundamental human rights.

Indian court rules sex with minor wife is rape

The Indian Supreme Court has ruled that sexual intercourse with a wife between the age of 15 and 18 years is a crime. In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, India's top court amended the country's rape law and declared that sex with an underage wife illegal under India's Penal Code (IPC).
