Croatian President Ivo Josipović meets with NPWJ and other human rights NGOs in Brussels

On Friday 5 March, No Peace Without Justice organised a meeting with H.E. Mr. Ivo Josipović, the newly elected President of the Republic of Croatia, and leading human rights NGOs to discuss the new priorities of Croatia in the field of the promotion of human rights, rule of law and international criminal justice.
 

 
The meeting, which was hosted by Niccolo' Figa'-Talamanca, NPWJ Secretary-General, in NPWJ Brussels office in cooperation with the Mission of Croatia to the EU, saw the participation of Louise Arbour (International Crisis Group), Nicolas Beger (Amnesty International), Marino Busdachin (Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation), Ivan Ivanov (European Roma Information Office), Lotte Leicht (Human Rights Watch), Antoine Madelin (FIDH), Marina Sikora (Transnational Nonviolent Radical Party).
 
Statement by Sergio Stanzani and Niccoló Figa-Talamanca, President and Secretary-General of No Peace Without Justice:
 
“No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty (NRPTT) are honored to have had the opportunity to host this meeting of H.E. President Ivo Josipovic. The fact that he took time to meet with representatives of leading human rights NGOs as part of his first trip to Brussels is a concrete testament to his political vision of stronger Croatian leadership in the assertion of the rule of law, justice and human rights, at home and abroad.
 
H.E. President Ivo Josipovic stated that civil society organizations have played and play a fundamental role in the ongoing process of building a more open and democratic society, and was essential in Croatia’s successful path in addressing war crimes and crimes against humanity which affected the country, contributing to anchor Croatia to democracy and rule of law and to restore peace, stability and development in South East Europe.
 
No Peace Without Justice welcomes Mr Josipovic’s pledges to close the accounts with the past and to help the government's efforts to remove remaining obstacles in Croatia's EU accession talks will conclude the final phase of the path to making Croatia the 28th member of the European Union by 2012.”
