UNHQ-NY, 22 March 2010

At a meeting organisied in partnership with the NGO Coalition for the International Criminal Court, Greta Barbone of No Peace Without Justice briefed Delegates of the Assembly of States Parties on the stocktaking issues that will be discussed at the Review Conference in Kampala in May-June 2010, highlighting the importance of high-level participation at the Review Conference.

Ms Barbone also underscored that in discussions on peace and justice, there is a need to consider the perspectives of victims and affected populations, many of whom have expressed the view that they will not feel secure until the perpetrators of violations against them are taken into custody or otherwise removed as threats to their existence.

Speaking on the stocktaking theme of the impact of the Rome Statute on victims and affected populations, she stressed the need to ensure that children's views, perspectives and expectations are heard, underscoring their right to participate in decisions affecting their lives, in a manner that facilitates their participation and protection, taking into account their best interests and their evolving capacities.
