Siria: liberare i difensori dei diritti umani detenuti da 3 anni

Oggi 71 organizzazioni per i diritti umani (tra cui Non c'è Pace Senza Giustizia), hanno dichiarato che Il governo siriano dovrebbe rilasciare immediatamente Mazen Darwish, Hani Al-Zitani e Hussein Gharir, illustri difensori dei diritti umani detenuti da tre anni. I tre uomini sono stati arbitrariamente privati della loro libertà sulla base delle loro attività in difesa dei diritti umani.
 
Le forze aeree siriane avevano arrestato i tre uomini il 16 febbraio 2012, nel corso di un raid negli uffici del Centro siriano per i media e la libertà di espressione (SCM) a Damasco. Darwish è il direttore del SCM, mentre  Al-Zitani e Gharir sono membri dello staff.
 
I tre uomini sono stati detenuti per circa un anno in condizioni di massima sicurezza, venendo sottoposti a torture e maltrattamenti. I tre sono in seguito stati trasferiti nella prigione Adra Central di Damsco.
 
Nel febbraio 2013, erano stati condotti al cospetto del tribunale anti-terrorismo, con le accuse di aver pubblicizzato atti terroristici, sotto l’articolo 8 della legge anti terrorismo del 2012. Da allora, il tribunale ha ripetutamente rinviato il processo, l’ultima volta nel gennaio 2015. Non è ancora stata fissata alcuna data per un prossimo processo.
 
Il SCM è un’importante organizzazione non governativa che lavora per diffondere informazioni sulla situazione dei diritti umani in Siria, e sui media e la libertà di espressione. Ha pubblicato studi sulla libertà dei media, sulle violenze contro i giornalisti e rapporti contenenti documentazione su numerosi civli scomparsi e detenuti.
 
Le organizzazioni firmatarie ritengono che Darwish, Al-Zitani e Gharir siano stati accusati come conseguenza della loro legittima attività in favore dei diritti umani e della libertà di espressione, in risposta alla crisi continua in Siria. Le autorità siriane dovrebbero rilasciare immediatamente e senza condizioni i tre uomini, e far cadere le accuse contro di loro.
 
L’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite, nella Risoluzione 67/262 del 15 maggio 2013, aveva domandato il rilascio dei tre uomini. A gennaio 2014, il Working Group dell’ONU sulla detenzione arbitraria (WGAD) aveva dimostrato che i tre uomini erano stati arbitrariamente privati della loro libertà a causa del loro impegno per i diritti umani, chiedendone il rilascio immediato. Anche nella Risoluzione 2139, adottata il 22 febbraio 2014 dal Consiglio di Sicurezza dell’Onu, si chiedeva l’immediato rilascio di tutte le persone arbitrariamente detenute in Siria.
 
Nonostante tutto ciò, i tre rimangono in custodia. Mentre Gharir continua a essere detenuto nella prigione Adra Central, Darwish e Al-Zitani sono stati trasferiti, senza spiegazioni, in quella di Sweida, rispettivamente il 31 gennaio e il 4 febbraio.
 
Il Governo della Siria dovrebbe ascoltare la voce delle Nazioni Unite e rilasciare immediatamente tutti coloro che sono arbitrariamente detenuti, hanno dichiarato le organizzazioni. Staffan De Mistura, Inviato speciale dell’ONU per la Siria, dovrebbe avere come priorità centrale quella del rilascio di questi tre difensori, come di tutti gli attivisti pacifici.
