Pressure mounts on Belgian government over Libya payments

Pressure is mounting on Belgium’s government to explain why payments of hundreds of millions of euros flowed to unknown recipients from frozen accounts in Brussels that once belonged to Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Opposition lawmakers are demanding that the administration of liberal Prime Minister Charles Michel answer questions after a public broadcaster this week linked the payments from the Libyan accounts in Brussels to arms shipments.

Human Rights Solidarity registered 859 victims of kidnap and assassinations in Libya

Human Rights Solidarity (HRS) said it had registered 859 victims of abduction and assassination across Libya in the first 9 months of 2018. HRS indicated that the majority of victims were civilians - 717 ones; that is 83% - and 50% of the incidents were assassinations while 26% were kidnap and 15% were arrest victims.

United Nations (UN) Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame on Wednesday warned that the UN would impose sanctions on those obstructing the implementation of the newly-approved security arrangements in the Libyan capital Tripoli. Salame made his remarks during a meeting with Libya’s UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj, and the Security Arrangements Committee (SAC) in Tripoli.

Al-Fuqaha attack highlights Islamic State’s growing confidence in Libya

On October 29, the Islamic State’s affiliate Wilayat Libya-Barqah claimed responsibility for a highly orchestrated attack in the town of al-Fuqaha, located in Jufra District. According to the group, its fighters carried out an assault on the town and gained control over it for several hours. In the process, IS militants set ablaze the local police headquarters and raided homes of alleged security personnel and individuals suspected of collaborating with the Libyan National Army and killed and detained multiple security personnel. At the same time, the group claimed a suicide bombing, followed by an armed assault, on a checkpoint along the Jufra-Sebha Road, which it said resulted in the killing and wounding of several LNA troops. Finally, IS claimed to have detonated an improvised explosive device on LNA forces pursuing fighters along the Desert Road.
