Iran: Adopt Draft Law to Protect Women

Iran should address gaps in its long-awaited draft law on violence against women that offers limited protections for survivors of domestic violence, and put it before the parliament for a vote, Human Rights Watch said today. Over the past year alone, several widely publicized instances of violence against women in Iran have drawn national attention and outrage. The authorities should also undertake to repeal discriminatory laws that leave women at risk of domestic violence.

End Abusive Sex Testing for Women Athletes

Women athletes, largely from the Global South, are targeted and harmed by “sex testing” regulations. Women being observed under the regulations, and in some cases being compelled to undergo a medical examination, amounts to policing women’s bodies based on arbitrary definitions of femininity and racial stereotypes. Sport governing bodies – including World Athletics and the International Olympic Committee – should remove all regulations that require medically unnecessary interventions for continuing eligibility.
