111 Organizations Express Deep Concern Regarding Current Threats to Reproductive Rights in Slovakia

The Slovak Parliament is currently debating draft legislation that if adopted would impose new barriers to accessing lawful abortion care, harm women’s health and well-being, and undermine their decision-making and privacy. Civil society organisations call on all Members of Parliament to reject the legislative proposal and to refrain from further attempts to restrict women’s reproductive rights in Slovakia.

Defy the Practice! Take a stand today to help end child marriage and FGM

Young women and girls in Uganda are prevented from achieving their full potential by prevailing social norms, beliefs and values, said youth activist Zahara Nabakooza, who spent a day in Dr. Natalia Kanem’s role as UNFPA Executive Director in 2018, when she was just 19 years old. Through school clubs, Ms. Nabakooza empowers girls with leadership skills and encourages them to speak out against harmful practices. She called for decision-makers such religious and community leaders, those in positions of political power, and men and boys, to accelerate actions to end child marriage and FGM, which the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates.

Twenty-five years ago today, the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing set a path-breaking agenda for women’s rights. A quarter century on, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, calls for urgent action: “With nations around the world searching for solutions to the complex challenges of our age, the leading way for all of us to rebuild more equal, inclusive, and resilient societies, is to accelerate the implementation of women’s rights – the Beijing Platform for Action. That vision has been only partly realized. We still live in a male-dominated world with a male-dominated culture, and this simply has to change”.

From insights to action: Gender equality in the wake of COVID-19

COVID-19 continues its rampage, with more than 25 million confirmed cases globally and more than 846,000 deaths as of August 2020. Measures to slow its spread are keeping people home and halting vital daily activities. More than 1 billion children and youth are out of school, resulting in learning deficits for students, particularly those from poor households. The impacts of crises are never gender neutral, and COVID-19 is no exception. While men reportedly have a higher fatality rate, women and girls are especially hurt by the resulting economic and social fallout. Impacts on women and girls have worsened across the board. Women are losing their livelihoods faster because they are more exposed to hard-hit economic sectors.
