Ukraine: “Historic victory for women’s rights” as Istanbul Convention ratified

Amid war, the Ukrainian Parliament ratifies the landmark international treaty on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. “This is a historic victory for women’s rights in Ukraine, and a contribution to the change in culture, attitudes and behaviours towards gender-based violence. It will ultimately affect the lives of every woman in the country. Today’s vote is a testament to years of campaigning by survivors who have helped to ensure that other women do not have to go through what they endured.”

The continent is home to 130 million child brides and nearly 140 million girls and women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). Over 40 million girls and women in Africa have experienced both harmful practices.

Africa: UNICEF Observes Day of African Child With Focus to End FGM in Gambia

This 16th June, we once again observe the Day of the African Child, but this time with a focus on assessing progress on policies to eliminate two of the worst harmful traditional practices, FGM and child marriage, compounded by underlying violence against children. In The Gambia, more than half of girls aged 0-14 years have undergone some form of female genital mutilation, whilst more than one in four girls is married before her 18th birthday.

Promoting women’s rights, a ‘proven’ strategy for peace and stability
