Fighting for LGBT rights in Myanmar with a 'pink pinky'

LGBT activists in Myanmar campaigning to decriminalise same-sex relations are urging thousands of people to paint their little finger pink as they try to highlight the issue ahead of elections later this year. Although space is opening up for the LGBT community in the conservative country, same-sex relations are still illegal, a legacy of former colonial power Britain. At the "pink pinky" campaign launch on Wednesday - held ahead of a Pride party in Yangon this weekend expected to attract more than 10,000 people - rights groups called for the ban to be repealed and for an anti-discrimination law to be enacted.

Poster for antifeminist and LGBT event triggers backlash against Wardah Cosmetics

A poster for an antifeminist and lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender (LGBT) event supposedly sponsored by Wardah Cosmetics has sparked an online backlash against the halal makeup producer. The poster was first posted on the Instagram account of a religious organization called Majelis Umat Rabbani Nur Islam (MURNI), advertising an open discussion about "The Dangers of Feminism and LGBT". The post was taken down at noon on Wednesday after Indonesian feminist website Magdalene wrote a comment objecting to the poster's use of one of its illustrations. When contacted by The Jakarta Post, Wardah Cosmetics public relations staff member Suci Hendrina said the company was looking into whether it was a sponsor of the event. A number of activists, feminist groups and other social media users have also asked whether the makeup company was sponsoring the event and threatened to boycott the brand if it did.

Ecuador's LGBT+ community seen suffering deadliest year in a decade

Last year was the deadliest in at least a decade for gay and transgender people in Ecuador, campaigners have said, citing a possible backlash against new laws enshrining LGBT+ rights. There were 16 murders or violent deaths involving LGBT+ people in the South American country in 2019, according to a report released by the Ecuadorian LGBT+ rights group Silueta X Association. The group said it was the highest number since it began keeping track in 2010 and most of the victims were transgender women. In 2018 it registered two LGBT+ murders. "We have reason to think that an expansion of hate speech can lead to increases in hate crimes."

The gayest Davos in history still isn’t gay enough

DAVOS - The World Economic Forum, which kicks off this week in Davos, prides itself on tackling some of the knottiest issues facing humanity. But on at least one front – the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people – the assemblage is uncharacteristically shy. The WEF is addressing the issue in some important ways, to be sure. The 2020 programme is arguably gayer than ever, with at least two official panels, including “LGBTI Rights and the Role of the Private Sector” and “Free to Be (LGBTI)”, which features Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s gay prime minister. But with 70 countries still persecuting same-sex relations, and many WEF corporate sponsors publicly supportive of equality, arguably more can be done.

Lawmakers in the US Unleash Barrage of Anti-Transgender Bills

Protecting children’s health is critical, and that means allowing doctors and their patients to decide what care is needed to keep a child physically and mentally healthy. Yet on Wednesday, lawmakers in the US state of South Dakota will consider a bill that would make it a felony for healthcare providers to give gender-affirming care to minors. If passed, medical professionals who provide transgender children with puberty blockers, hormones, or other transition-related care would face up to 10 years in prison. In a cruel twist, the bill makes an exception for doctors and parents to make surgical interventions – whether or not they are necessary – on intersex children, a practice that seriously jeopardizes health and rights. If enacted, the bill would perversely give doctors a free pass to perform medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex infants too young to participate in the decision, but would make it a criminal offense for a doctor to provide medically recommended treatment to an informed transgender 17-year-old seeking care.
