Activist faces trial in Poland for aiding abortion

Justyna Wydrzyńska, 47-year-old mother of three, who has been helping women access abortion for more than 15 years, is set to face trial in Poland this week for violating the country’s strict abortion law. She could be imprisoned for a maximum of three years if found guilty of providing abortion-inducing tablets to a pregnant woman.

Week of documentary films raises awareness of women’s rights in Afghanistan

In the eyes of Afghan filmmaker Sahraa Karimi, Afghan women have been left behind.  Karimi, whose documentaries explore the issues of women’s rights in Afghanistan, showcased her films “Parlika,” “Hava, Maryam, Ayesha” and “Afghan Women Behind the Wheel” in Luce Hall and the Loria Center from March 29 to 31. Karimi was invited to present at Yale by Charles Musser, professor of film and media studies and director of the Yale Summer Film Institute.

Hundreds of Ukrainians forcibly deported to Russia, say Mariupol women

 Russian forces are sending Ukrainian citizens to “filtration camps” before forcibly relocating them to Russia, according to the accounts of two women who said they were transported to Russian territory from the besieged city of Mariupol last month.

Iran: Women Blocked From Entering Stadium
Human Rights Watch, 31 Mar 2022

Iranian authorities prevented dozens of Iranian women from entering Imam Reza football stadium in the city of Mashhad on March 29, 2022, possibly using excessive force, Human Rights Watch said today. FIFA should use its leverage with Iranian authorities to demand that they urgently overturn Iran’s discriminatory stadium ban on women and ensure accountability for abuses.

‘Staggering number’ of unintended pregnancies reveals failure to uphold women’s rights

Over 60 per cent of unintended pregnancies end in abortion and an estimated 45 per cent of all abortions are unsafe, accounting for five to 13 per cent of all maternal deaths recorded, according to the UNFPA’s flagship State of World Population 2022 report.  This is also having a major impact on the planet’s ability to reach the Sustainable Development Goals by the 2030 target date.

Somalia: Early Marriages, FGM and Closure of Businesses Threaten Girls and Women as Drought Worsens

Indicators point to the erosion of gains made for girls’ and women’s rights in Somalia as the drought worsens. Girls are being forced to drop out of school putting them at risk of harmful traditional practices such as early marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Women-run businesses have been hit especially hard with 98% of them having lost revenue and income due to the high cost of goods, and 51% have been forced to close.
