Seminar on Implementation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court

Freetown, 11-15 December 2006

NPWJ, in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leonean NGO “Manifesto 99” and the Commonwealth Secretariat and with financial support from the European Union, the Open Society Institute and the Special Court for Sierra Leone, convened a seminar on the Implementation of the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court from 11-15 December 2006 at the Miatta Conference Centre, Freetown, Sierra Leone. Participants at the seminar, which was formally opened by the Director of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, included representatives of the Government of Sierra Leone, Parliament, Paramount Chiefs, legal practitioners, the Special Court for Sierra Leone, the International Committee of the Red Cross, civil society and other opinion leaders.

Preparatory seminars organised by Manifesto 99 throughout Sierra Leone ensured participation from all parts of the country. These seminars, with a total of 250 participants from all sectors of Sierra Leone society, were designed so as to maximise the spread of information and discussion about international criminal justice, in particular about the Rome Statute and the needs for domestic implementation, and to provide the opportunity to select participants for the seminar focusing on implementation of the Rome Statute on 11 15 December.
