7th session of the Consultative Assembly of Parliamentarians for the ICC and the Rule of Law: Celebrating 10 years of the Rome Statute

On 10-11 December 2012, the 7th session of the Consultative Assembly of Parliamentarians for the ICC and the Rule of Law will be hosted by the Parliament of Italy in the birthplace of the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking the 10th Anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Rome Statute.
 
Its meetings represent a unique opportunity for over a hundred legislators of all continents, together with ICC officials, government representatives and relevant international organizations involved in the fight against impunity, to discuss and define strategies to advance strategic goals and mobilize in support of the universality of the Rome Statute and effectiveness of the ICC-system through the application of the principle of complementarity and the full cooperation of States and other stakeholders with the Court, as well as the protection of the integrity of the Statute.
 
Representatives of No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ), namely Emma Bonino, Vice-President of the Italian senate and Founder of NPWJ, and Niccolo’ Figa-Talamanca, Secretary General of NPWJ, as well as the Italian Radical parliamentarians Matteo Mecacci and Marco Perduca, will intervene during the two-day debate to highlight the policy priorities aimed at promoting accountability, rule of law and human rights through  a reinforced international criminal justice system.
 
On the evening of 10 December, the Defender of Democracy Awards (DDA) will be granted to two women human rights activists: Sister Simone Campbell, Executive Director of NETWORK (United States), for her distinguished advocacy and commitment to economic justice and peacebuilding; and Ms. Khady Koita, President of La Palabre (Belgium/Senegal) for her commitment to women’s rights and advocacy for a worldwide ban on female genital mutilation* as a human rights violation.

* On 26 November 2012, the Humanitarian Cultural Affairs Committee (commonly referred to as the Third Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the draft resolution “Intensifying Global Efforts for the elimination of female genital mutilation” submitted by the African Group at the UN last October. The UNGA is expected to consider its adoption in December in the framework of its 67th session. The formal adoption of the draft resolution is the result of years of advocacy efforts to bring worldwide attention to the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM), spearheaded by an ever-expanding Ban FGM Coalition, composed of NPWJ, the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (IAC), Euronet-FGM, the NGOs La Palabre, Manifesto 99 and Equality Now.
