Special Tribunal for Lebanon: NPWJ extends its full support to the new Registrar and looks forward to his leadership in the fight for justice and accountability

Brussels-Rome, 25 July 2013

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, has appointed Daryl A. Mundis to the post of Registrar of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Mr Mundis had been serving as Acting Registrar since 18 April, following the departure of Herman von Hebel. He first joined the STL on 24 August 2009 as Chief of Prosecutions. Prior to joining the Tribunal, he spent more than a decade at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. As a Senior Prosecuting Trial Attorney with the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICTY, he was the lead prosecutor in a number of high profile cases, including the Šešelj and Delić cases. Previously, he was a trial attorney on the Galić (Siege of Sarajevo), Foča, and Keraterm Camp cases; he also worked as the international humanitarian law adviser on the Kosovo component of the Milošević case.

Statement by Alison Smith, Legal Counsel of No Peace Without Justice:

“No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty (NRPTT) congratulate Mr Daryl A. Mundis for his appointment as the new Registrar of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). While the challenges are great, we are confident that the STL will benefit from his invaluable qualifications and skills, honed by his ample experience in the work of international criminal courts. We look forward to his mandate being marked by further advances in the Tribunal's fulfilling its key promise of justice and redress and being more and more responsive and better known to the people affected by the crimes it investigates and prosecutes."

“We particularly welcome his stated intention to ensure a robust outreach strategy as a vital policy priority of the STL’s work. Engaging victims and affected populations in Lebanon and empowering them so they may participate in processes that were established for them, is central to strengthen the relevance and impact of the Tribunal in the political and social life of the country.

“NPWJ extends its full support to the new Registrar as he assumes his new duties and has the utmost confidence that he will dedicate priority attention to undertake the necessary efforts to allow the Tribunal to fulfil its mandate and leave a positive legacy in respect of peace, justice and the rule of law in Lebanon”.
