DESCRIPTION:Emma Bonino\, insieme a Non c’è Pace Senza Giustizia e Le Contemporanee\, con il supporto di +Europa\, organizzano l’evento “La Forza delle Donne”\, che si terrà il 6 dicembre 2022 allo Spazio Europa a Roma\, via Quattro Novembre 149\, \nper sostenere\, alla vigilia della giornata dei Diritti Umani\, le lotte\, il coraggio e la determinazione delle donne che scendono in piazza e si battono per i loro diritti\, per quelli delle future generazioni e per i diritti umani di tutti. \nNelle società più repressive del mondo\, sono infatti le donne a guidare il cambiamento\, dall’Afghanistan all’Iran\, dall’Ucraina e dalla Bielorussia all’Iraq. Questo non dovrebbe sorprendere: le donne sono e sono sempre state intrinsecamente forti. \nFin dalla giovane età\, alle donne viene insegnato a essere il vento sotto le ali di qualcun altro\, ad essere la forza “interiore” che consente agli uomini di essere forti e di successo in pubblico. Ora\, durante i periodi di avversità\, sono proprio (o quasi sempre) le donne ad assumere la leadership: sono loro che gestiscono le scarse risorse per garantire la sopravvivenza dei più vulnerabili; sono loro che svolgono una serie di ruoli per garantire servizi essenziali e quant’altro sia necessario. SUMMARY:Crisi globale e potenziale della Corte penale internazionale: rilevanza dell'ecocidio come "quinto crimine"
DESCRIPTION:21ª ASP della CPI\, L’Aia\, 6 dicembre 2022 \nLo Statuto di Roma intende affrontare i “crimini più gravi che interessano la comunità internazionale nel suo complesso”\, quegli atti che maggiormente “minacciano la pace\, la sicurezza e il benessere del mondo”. \nI danni e la distruzione di massa di ecosistemi vitali causati dall’attività umana costituiscono oggi proprio una minaccia di questo tipo su scala globale. Tali danni e distruzioni\, oggi sempre più spesso definiti “ecocidi”\, non hanno solo conseguenze dirette e devastanti per le comunità e le nazioni attuali\, ma anche implicazioni gravissime per il futuro della civiltà umana nel suo complesso\, nonché per la più ampia comunità di specie con cui condividiamo la nostra casa planetaria. \nL’inclusione dell’ecocidio nell’ambito di applicazione dello Statuto di Roma ha quindi una forte rilevanza per il mandato della Corte penale internazionale. Questo aspetto è riconosciuto e discusso da un numero crescente di Stati parte e dalla Corte stessa\, come è stato riconosciuto durante la conferenza per il 20° anniversario il 1° luglio di quest’anno. \nQuesto evento collaterale esamina il rapido progresso globale di questa discussione\, l’importanza della definizione giuridica consensuale di ecocidio (Gruppo di esperti indipendenti\, giugno 2021) in questo progresso e il potenziale per la CPI di svolgere un ruolo decisivo nell’affrontare la più grande sfida del nostro tempo. \nRelatori:\nOn. SUMMARY:Strengthening Accountability Globally
DESCRIPTION:Side event to the 21st session of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC \nThe expanded conflict in Ukraine has triggered a strong response from the international community\, including through unprecedented support for a variety of justice initiatives to pursue accountability for grave international crimes. The range of initiatives demonstrates just how interconnected are the different elements and dimensions of what may be understood as the “ecosystem” to deliver justice for serious international crimes. In Ukraine\, it remains to be seen how all these elements will coordinate and interact with each other\, as has also been the case in other situations. Renewed attention now on the role of the ICC and the importance of accountability provides an opportunity to reflect on the linkages within the broader system and the concrete ways in which governments through their support for a range of justice-related initiatives can bolster the system globally. \nThese dimensions include: \n\nProviding financial\, political\, and practical support to domestic\, hybrid\, and international courts tackling grave international crimes;\nExpanding the ICC’s membership to extend the court’s reach and victims’ access to justice;\nCriminalizing and prosecuting grave crime domestically\, including by ensuring that adequate legal and institutional frameworks are in place;\nShowing greater consistency in the judicial response to atrocities wherever they occur; and\nRestraining the use of the UN Security Council veto in situations of mass atrocities.\n\n  \nThis side event aims to explore different elements and dimensions of the international justice ecosystem and discuss concrete steps that civil society organisations and governments are already taking to achieve the goal of bolstering accountability for serious crimes globally. \nOpening remarks: Amb. SUMMARY:Justice for the Rohingya: Paths Forward
DESCRIPTION:Side event to the 21st session of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC \n\nOverview\nProgram Strategy\nProgram Activities\nProgram History\nPartners & Donors\n\nIn the margins of the 21th Session of the International Criminal Court Assembly of States Parties\, the Delegations of Bangladesh and The Gambia to the ICC and No Peace Without Justice are convening a Side-event on “Justice for the Rohingya: Paths Forward”\, to be held on 9 December 2021 (08h30 hrs CET). \nIn November 2019\, at the International Criminal Court (ICC)\, the Pre-Trial Chamber authorised the Prosecutor to open an investigation into the situation in Bangladesh/Myanmar over alleged crimes against humanity of deportation and persecution on grounds of ethnicity and/or religion against the Rohingya population. The investigation is currently ongoing. \nAt the same time\, The Gambia suo moto filed the Rohingya case as a universal concern\, by bringing genocide allegations before the International Court of Justice (ICJ); and seeking provisional measures directed towards ending the genocide\, punishing the perpetrators who committed it and protecting and preserving the relevant evidence. The ICJ ordered provisional measures\, including that Myanmar prevent and punish the commission of genocide and report to the ICJ periodically on measures to implement those provisional measures. Two weeks before the coup in early 2021\, Myanmar lodged an objection to the case. With that pending\, Myanmar’s Counter-Memorial is due in April 2023 \nMeanwhile\, in Argentina\, a universal jurisdiction Case was filed by Mr Tun Khin\, President of the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK)\, alleging serious crimes including genocide against the Rohingya. On 26 November 2021\, The Second Chamber of the Federal Criminal Court in Buenos Aires confirmed that it would launch a case against senior Myanmar officials\, including General Min Aung Hlaing and much of the current junta’s senior leadership. Most recently\, the Argentine Courts have sought relevant information from Meta in relation to material posted on Facebook that vilifies the Rohingya and spreads false information. \nAll the three Cases came together in a “perfect storm” in November 2019; despite their slow progression\, the Cases continue to raise hopes that justice might eventually become a reality for the Rohingyas. \nThree years on\, this ASP side event aims to take stock of justice efforts for the Rohingyas\, examining these efforts in the broader geopolitical context\, including the influence of external circumstances\, and in light of the expectations of Rohingya human rights activists and others.
