{"id":241681,"date":"2020-09-16T12:00:31","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T10:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.npwj.org\/?p=241681"},"modified":"2023-04-07T19:43:04","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T17:43:04","slug":"npwj-joins-civil-society-in-calling-on-the-members-of-the-ukrainian-parliament-to-take-necessary-steps-to-fully-align-domestic-legislation-with-international-criminal-and-humanitarian-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.npwj.org\/it\/press-release\/npwj-joins-civil-society-in-calling-on-the-members-of-the-ukrainian-parliament-to-take-necessary-steps-to-fully-align-domestic-legislation-with-international-criminal-and-humanitarian-law\/","title":{"rendered":"NPWJ joins civil society in calling on the members of the Ukrainian Parliament to take necessary steps to fully align domestic legislation with international criminal and humanitarian law"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><strong>Brussels, 16 September 2020<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npwj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/CICC-Members-letter-to-Members-of-the-Rada_16Sept2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Download the letter in pdf format<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To the Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We respectfully call on you to ensure Ukraine demonstrates its serious commitment to victims of international crimes and takes the necessary steps to fully align its domestic legislation with international criminal law and international humanitarian law, including by incorporating provisions enabling the effective investigation and prosecution of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes by Ukraine\u2019s national authorities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Under international law, States have the primary responsibility to investigate, prosecute and punish the perpetrators of these crimes and provide redress to victims.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We understand that Draft Law 2689 \u201cOn amendments to certain legislative acts on the Enforcement of International Criminal and Humanitarian Law\u201d is on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada session this week, and we therefore call on you to ensure it is given positive consideration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Aligning\u00a0national\u00a0legislation\u00a0with\u00a0international\u00a0law\u00a0will\u00a0equip national\u00a0authorities\u00a0with\u00a0aspects\u00a0of\u00a0the legal framework necessary to support the effective investigation and prosecution of international crimes, building on the creation of the specialized \u201cDepartment for Supervision in Criminal Proceedings of the Crimes Committed in Armed Conflict\u201d in October 2019.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The harmonization of the criminal code of Ukraine with international law will strengthen the domestic justice\u00a0system\u00a0and\u00a0respect\u00a0for\u00a0human\u00a0rights\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0rule\u00a0of\u00a0law. Importantly, it will send a strong message to the people of Ukraine and the international community that your country is committed to bringing perpetrators of international crimes to justice, and to
