{"id":242636,"date":"2022-11-14T12:00:58","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T11:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.npwj.org\/?p=242636"},"modified":"2023-02-21T15:59:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T14:59:23","slug":"universal-periodic-review-of-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.npwj.org\/it\/press-release\/universal-periodic-review-of-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Universal Periodic Review of Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 14-18 November 2022, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group will proceed with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/hr-bodies\/upr\/br-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>fourth review cycle of Brazil<\/strong><\/a>, assessing the compliance of the country with its obligations and commitments in terms of human rights. The role of this UN Human Rights Council mechanism is to assess implementation of previous UPR recommendations and the evolution of the human rights situation in Member States. To this end, the Council also relies on input from civil society organisations and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this framework,&nbsp;NPWJ, together with a group of Brazilian organisations (\u201cInstituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amaz\u00f4nia\u201d (Imazon), the \u201cInstituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amaz\u00f4nia\u201d (IPAM), \u201cSeja Legal com a Amaz\u00f4nia\u201d campaign, the \u201cInstituto O Mundo que Queremos\u201d (IOMMQ) and \u201cAmigos da Terra\u201d \u2013 Brazilian Amazon Rainforest), submitted a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npwj.org\/press-release\/joining-forces-for-human-rights-the-environment-and-indigenous-peoples-in-brazil-informing-the-universal-periodic-review-of-the-un-human-rights-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>joint document<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;to inform the UPR of their perspectives, with a focus on human rights, the environment and the rights of indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npwj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/UPR_NPWJFinalDraft30Mar2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>joint submission<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;provides an analysis of the implementation of recommendations made to Brazil by State Parties in previous stages of the UPR process. It also provides direct recommendations to members of the Human Rights Council assessing Brazil to help the country fulfil its international human rights obligations.&nbsp;These include: increase transparency in government agencies and develop opportunities for public participation in Brazil\u2019s land designation process; forbid the issuance of land titles for recently deforested areas and forbid future land occupations from being legalised; and ensure that plans such as \u201cAux\u00edlio Brasil\u201d (Brazilian social welfare program) and \u201cCesta B\u00e1sica\u201d (food parcel) meet the needs of indigenous peoples, especially in relation to their food and cultural needs, which are crucial for their survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The submission was extensively incorporated into the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npwj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Summaryofstakeholdersinformation-BrazilUPR2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Summary of
