On the day of the\u00a0adoption of Bahrain\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Report by the UN Human Rights Council<\/strong>, the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty (NRPTT), together with international and Bahraini partners, will host a side event “Towards Justice for Bahrain<\/strong>” to hear from activists on the ground in Bahrain about the real situation the country is in, uncovering the truth in Bahrain and showing the real face of a campaign of repression to silence opposition and independent voices.<\/p>\n

Following the publication of the\u00a0Report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry<\/a>\u00a0(BICI) in November 2011, the King and authorities in Bahrain pledged to implement the recommendations within the BICI Report, a commitment they reiterated during the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR) last May. Despite these pledges, the human rights situation in Bahrain has deteriorated. There have been severe restrictions on peaceful assembly and protests; use of lethal weapons such as gas and pellet shots; continued arrests, including 89 children; unfair trials; and repression against human rights organisations and activists. This is taking place in the context of a campaign of hatred and slander against several opposition groups and actions taken in respect of UN Human Rights mechanisms, including threats of reprisals against Bahraini human rights organisations participating in the UPR process and blocking internet access to the recent HRC sessions on the same topic just this past week.<\/p>\n

The meeting will take place on\u00a0Wednesday 19 September 2012<\/strong>,\u00a0from 2pm to 4pm<\/strong>, in Room XVI, Palais Des Nations, Geneva.<\/p>\n

Speakers to the meeting, to be co-chaired by\u00a0Mohammed Al Tajer\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Human Rights Lawyer and\u00a0Massoud Shadjareh<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 IHRC, and moderated by\u00a0Niccol\u00f2 Fig\u00e0-Talamanca<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013Secretary-General, NPWJ, include:\u00a0Sayed Hadi Al Mosawi<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Head of Human Rights Section, Al Wefaq;\u00a0Lamees Dhaif\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Bahraini journalist (includes short film);\u00a0Said Yousif Almuhafda<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Bahrain Centre for Human Rights;\u00a0Husain Abdulla<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013Director, Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain;\u00a0Jaleela Al-Salman<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Deputy Vice President Bahrain Teacher\u02bcs Union<\/p>\n

The meeting is hosted by the\u00a0Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty<\/strong><\/a>, NGO with General (Category I) Consultative Status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and co-hosted by the\u00a0Islamic Human Rights Committee<\/strong>,\u00a0No Peace Without Justice<\/strong>, the\u00a0Bahrain Human Rights Organisation<\/strong>, the\u00a0Bahrain Human Rights Society<\/strong>,\u00a0the\u00a0Bahrain Rehabilitation and Anti-Violence Organisation (BRAVO)<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Al Wefaq Human Rights Department<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
