We write to ask you to publicly speak out against this clear violation of human rights, and to make clear the European Union\u2019s stance on Rajab\u2019s case and the human rights crackdown in Bahrain.<\/p>\n<p>Rajab\u2019s hearing is scheduled for 31 October, when he is expected to be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. Rajab has already been held in pre-trial detention for 137 days, mainly in solitary confinement. His health has seriously deteriorated as a consequence of poor detention conditions and lack of sustained medical assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Rajab has been detained since 13 June 2016, based on charges related to his comments on Twitter, documenting allegations of torture in Bahrain\u2019s Jau Prison and criticizing the escalating humanitarian crisis caused by the Saudi-led coalition airstrikes in Yemen. Rajab faces three charges in relation to these tweets, including \u201cdefaming a statutory body,\u201d \u201coffending a foreign country,\u201d and \u201cdisseminating false news in a time of war,\u201d for which he faces up to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>On 4 September, the New York Times published Rajab\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/05\/opinion\/letter-from-a-bahraini-jail.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Letter from a Bahraini jail<\/a>\u201d, addressed to the US authorities. In it, he criticised his country for being one \u201cthat punishes its people for thinking, that prevents its citizens from exercising their basic rights.\u201d The following day, on 5 September, Bahrain\u2019s Public Prosecutor<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alwasatnews.com\/news\/1156482.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0charged<\/a>\u00a0Rajab with \u201cintentionally broadcasting false news and malicious rumours abroad impairing the prestige of the state,\u201d which carries an additional one-year prison term if he is convicted.<\/p>\n<p>Rajab\u2019s case has sparked international outrage from government officials like the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bahrainrights.org\/en\/node\/8143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spokesperson<\/a>\u00a0of the US Department of State,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54250#.V2bcBTHLcde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Secretary-General\u00a0<\/a>Ban Ki-Moon, and members of the\u00a0EU Parliament\u00a0who have all denounced the arrest of Rajab. Whilst we appreciate these efforts, we reiterate our deep concerns over his health and freedom.<\/p>\n<p>We, the undersigned NGOs, believe Rajab is being targeted as a human rights defender by the Bahraini authorities in an attempt to silence all forms of dissent and suppress freedom of expression in the kingdom. All charges against Rajab are in violation of his fundamental human rights &#8211; in particular the right to freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the alarming developments in Rajab\u2019s case, who could be sentenced to 15 years in prison on 31 October, we urge you to dispatch an official delegation to the Kingdom of Bahrain, to expressly address EU concerns about the human rights situation in Bahrain, and to support the release of Rajab, and of all other human rights defenders imprisoned in Bahrain.<\/p>\n<p>Rajab\u2019s sentencing is the latest in a series of Bahraini government actions restricting civil society space. The government penalizes criticism and human rights work as criminal activities, and Rajab\u2019s prosecution aims to silence the last remaining voice in Bahrain, as well as to instill a culture of fear and impunity. It follows the dissolution of Al-Wefaq, the largest political party in the country, by the Ministry of Justice, the prosecution of over 60 shia clerics for protesting since June, and the imposition of travel bans against around 20 human rights activists, ahead of UNHRC sessions in June and September this year.<\/p>\n<p>Rajab has suffered for his human rights activism since 2011, including prison sentences between 2012-14 and in 2015. In 2014, the prosecution imposed a travel ban on him after his return from an advocacy trip in Europe, where he visited the UNHRC in Geneva, the European Parliament in Brussels, and other European capitals. This posed a heavy restriction on his human rights work.<\/p>\n<p>Rajab\u2019s comments on Twitter, documenting torture in Bahrain\u2019s Jau Prison and criticising the escalating humanitarian crisis caused by the Saudi-led coalition airstrikes in Yemen led to his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2015\/04\/03\/bahrain-free-rights-activist-held-tweets\">\u00a0arrest<\/a>\u00a0on 2 April 2015. Authorities released him on 13 July 2015 when he received a royal pardon during Ramadan for his previous six-month sentence, but prosecutors did not close the cases and ordered his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/press-releases\/2016\/06\/bahrain-arrest-of-nabeel-rajab\/\">\u00a0re-arrest<\/a>\u00a0on 13 June 2016.<\/p>\n<p>We urge you not to remain silent in the face of
