{"id":254034,"date":"2019-11-11T09:28:39","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.npwj.org\/?p=254034"},"modified":"2024-01-23T09:31:48","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T08:31:48","slug":"accountability-for-the-rohingya-genocide-the-icj-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.npwj.org\/it\/press-release\/accountability-for-the-rohingya-genocide-the-icj-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Accountability for the Rohingya Genocide: the ICJ Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #666666; font-size: 14px;\">The Hague Humanity Hub, Den Haag, Netherlands, 11 November 2019<\/span><\/h1>\n<div id=\"node-16898\" class=\"node node node-mine clearfix node-type-news\">\n<div class=\"node-inner\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>On Monday 11 November 2019, No Peace Without Justice, together with the Association pour la Lutte Contre l\u2019Impunit\u00e9 et pour la Justice Transitionnelle, the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, the Global Justice Center, Human Rights Watch, the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute, Parliamentarians for Global Action and the Women&#8217;s Initiatives for Gender Justice convened a meeting \u201c<strong>Accountability for the Rohingya Genocide: the ICJ Case<\/strong>\u201d, which was held at The Hague Humanity Hub (11:00 \u2013 13:00).<\/p>\n<p>The Rohingya genocide in Myanmar is one of the most pressing human rights challenges of our times. There have been various attempts at accountability, including the UN Fact-Finding Mission and Investigative Mechanism and the pending ICC investigation, although nothing has borne fruit yet. With the announcement by\u00a0<strong>Gambia<\/strong>\u00a0that it would initiate proceedings against Myanmar before the\u00a0<strong>International Court of Justice (ICJ) under the 1948 Genocide Convention<\/strong>, there is now a new and important possibility for accountability.<br \/>\nThis meeting provided an update on the initiative, also addressing the implications of State responsibility under the Genocide Convention for deterring further crimes and providing redress for the victims and the role for civil society and other stakeholders in this important accountability initiative. The meeting was opened by\u00a0<strong>Hon. Ba Tambadou<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of The Gambia<\/strong>\u00a0and members of his legal team. Participants includde some representatives of the Rohingya community, and others that have been most supportive of this initiative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a
