NPWJ and KADEM organise Media Training on “The International Criminal Court and Transitional justice in Libya and Tunisia”

 
The Al Kawakibi Democracy Transition Center (KADEM) and No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) are organising a training of the media on “The International Criminal Court and Transitional justice in Libya and Tunisia”, to be held under the framework of the Transitional Justice Academy in Tunis on 11-12 June 2013.
 
Building on the activities that NPWJ and KADEM organised on 25-28 September 2012 on The Rome Statute and the ICC with Fadi Al-Abdallah, ICC Spokesperson and Head of the Public Affairs Unit, and Amady Ba, Head of International Cooperation at the ICC Office of the Prosecutor, this initiative has the objective of continuing to promote the ICC and transitional justice in Libya and Tunisia. Our goals are building the capacity of members of the media in Libya and Tunisia to report effectively on the ICC and transitional justice as well as strengthening their interest on these subjects.
 
The ICC and transitional justice mechanisms are fundamental to bring accountability and redress for victims of crimes under international law and mass violations of human rights. The media can play a key role in shaping and mobilising public opinion around the ICC and transitional justice, promoting ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute and the establishment of transitional accountability processes. Media coverage is more likely to be objective and accurate if it is well-informed and has a good knowledge of these issues. However, the Libyan and Tunisian media is not accustomed to covering justice issues, given the lack of transparency around them under the former regimes, and they often have misconceptions and misunderstandings that are reflected in their work. This training will engage members of the media to increase their understanding of the ICC and transitional justice and their role in Libya and Tunisia’s transitions.
