Kampala - “War Victims Day Football Game”

Kampala, Uganda, 30 May 2010

As a highlight of the activities that form War Victims Day on Sunday 30 May 2010, the Uganda Victims Foundation and the African Youth Initiative Network hosted a football game at the Nambole National Stadium in Kampala, on the eve of the Review Conference for the International Criminal Court (ICC). The football game was attended by H.E. President Museveni and H.E. BAN Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations.

The War Victims Day Football Game provided a unique opportunity for the Republic of Uganda, the United Nations and States Parties of the ICC to stand shoulder to shoulder with victims of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. UVF and AYINET wanted the football game to demonstrate to the world that impunity will no longer be tolerated and we cannot overstate the impact it could have on the thousands of men, women and children who have been disenfranchised from everyday life because they have suffered these very serious crimes.

The football players included: war victims from countries where the ICC are investigating war crimes (from Darfur, southern Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and Uganda), H.E. President Museveni of Uganda and H.E. BAN Ki-moon, the President of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC, ICC Review Conference Delegates, among whom the Ministers of Justice of Italy and the Netherlands, and Ugandan National Team football players.

The event was organised by the Uganda Victims Foundation and the African Youth Initiative Network with organisational support and technical expertise from the international NGO, No Peace Without Justice.
