It is with profound sorrow that No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ)* mourns the passing of Abdul Rahim Kamara, a fearless human rights activist, civic leader, and beacon of hope for justice in Sierra Leone. While Rahim’s life was tragically cut short, his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to human rights will continue to inspire generations in Sierra Leone and beyond.
Rahim Kamara, based in Freetown, was a relentless advocate for the rule of law, gender equality, and democratic accountability in a nation celebrated for its resilience and vibrant community spirit. Known for his bold voice on the radio and online (@alimamytamba), he galvanised communities to embrace positive change—with courage, clarity, and an infectious passion for progress. His activism was rooted in a deep love for his country and a belief that justice is the foundation of lasting peace.
Rahim was equally committed to strengthening Sierra Leone’s democratic institutions. In March 2024, he encouraged the Sierra Leone Bar Association to foster unity in its leadership, emphasizing the legal community’s vital role in upholding the rule of law. His calls for transparency—whether celebrating national milestones or commemorating the anniversary of Sierra Leone’s journey toward peace—reflected a civic conscience that honored history’s triumphs.
Among his many contributions to human rights and empowerment, Abdul Rahim’s campaign to ban Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Sierra Leone stood as a testament to his dedication to protecting the most vulnerable. In February 2024, he launched a widely supported petition on Change.org, calling for comprehensive legislation, education, and enforcement to end the practice that affects Sierra Leonean women and girls. His work amplified the voices of survivors and aligned with global human rights standards, resonating deeply with NPWJ’s mission to end FGM and promote gender justice.
In a nation full of dedicated citizens, Abdul Rahim’s courage was extraordinary. He remained steadfast in his efforts to build a brighter future, blending sharp insight with moments of personal warmth as a Tottenham Hotspur fan. His posts on X, much as his legendary voice on the radio in the past, connected deeply with his community, fostering dialogue and hope.
No Peace Without Justice salutes Abdul Rahim Kamara’s legacy as a partner in the global fight for human rights. His work complemented our campaigns to end impunity and promote accountability, and his loss leaves a void in Sierra Leone’s civic landscape. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow activists. As we grieve, we recommit to carrying forward his vision: a Sierra Leone where justice flourishes, and everyone thrives together.
Uncle Rahim, your voice will echo in every step toward peace and justice. Rest in power.
