No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) will attend the Subministerial Meeting of the Forum for the Future 2009, to be hosted on 23 October 2009 in Rome, under the co-presidency of Italy and Morocco.

The purpose of the Subministerial meeting is to present and discuss the recommendations emerged from the three workshops organized in Beirut (Lebanon), Rabat (Morocco) and Doha (Qatar) by NPWJ in cooperation with local partners (the Lebanese Organization for Civil Activities (OPAC), the Moroccan Organization for Human Rights (OMDH), the Arab Democracy Foundation (ADF) and the Qatari National Human Rights Commission). These recommendations will inform the discussion of the Ministerial Meeting of the Forum for the Future 2009, to be held in Marrakech, Morocco, on 2-3 November 2009, and provide a set of constructive proposals and recommendations that could fruitfully feed the discussion between governments and civil society.

The workshops were part of a series of initiatives organised in preparation for the 2009 Forum for the Future, in coordination with the Democracy Assistance Dialogue (DAD) partnership, aimed at promoting productive dialogue on a peer-to-peer basis between civil society and governments of the bMENA Region, G8 and other democratic partners, on issues relating to human development and human Security, economic and political reforms in countries of the region. These meetings provided a setting for concrete exchanges between high-level governmental and non-governmental actors from the Region aiming at the development of proposals and goals that can be jointly agreed upon by them. In that sense, the workshops held in Rabat, Beirut and Doha built upon the guiding principles for stronger dialogue and cooperation between Governments and civil society contained in the “Partnership document”, which has been acknowledged by the fifth Forum of the Future held in Abu Dhabi in October 2008.

Participants to the Rome subministerial meeting will include high-level governmental representatives and prominent democracy activists from the broader Middle East and North Africa (bMENA) Region.
