International seminar on “Democracy and Freedom: the Role of Women in Iraq”

On 3-4 November 2011, an international Seminar on “Democracy and Freedom: the Role of Women” will be held at the University of Genoa, in Italy. The Seminar, promoted and organised by Minerva in cooperation with Legal Aid Worldwide (LAW), is part of a broader project implemented by No Peace Without Justice and the Iraqi association International Alliance for Justice (IAJ) with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aiming at promoting the cultural and political role of Iraqi women, within democracy building process and human rights protection in Iraq.

Issues to be discussed will include women’s rights in Iraq, through different thematic sessions focusing on the representation and influence of women in politics, violated rights in marriage, the rule of law and religious freedom, women’s struggle for equality in the workplace and in school, the health issue and policies for children and, finally, the women’s creativity and knowledge through culture, art and communication.

Participants will include Safia Al SouhailBerevan Sarhank and Vian Dakheel,  members of the Iraqi Parliament; Ghada Al Aamili, director of Al Mada Establishment Media, Souad Al Jazairy, journalist, writer and TV producer, Maha Al Sakban, director of Women’s Rights Center.
Panelists from Italy will include: Maria Rosa Biggi, Councillor of Genoa Town Council, Rita Falaschi, Head of Equal Opportunities Office at Genoa Province, Marylin Fusco, Vice President of the Liguria Region, Adele Maiello, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Genova, Silvia Neonato, journalist for “Leggendaria” magazine, Simone Ovart, President of UN Women Italy, Alessandra Rissotto, journalist at RAI tg3 Liguria, Aristide Canepa, Professor of Constitutional Law of Mediterranean Countries at the University of Genova, Cesare Maria Calabrese, Honorary Judge for the Juvenile Tribunal of the Genoa Appeal Court section.
