During the 5th Session of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentarian Union of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (UIP-IGAD), held in Djibouti, on 7–9 January 2012, the members of the Caucus of Women Parliamentarians adopted a Declaration calling for the successful completion of the UN process to ban female genital mutilation worldwide.
Recalling the historic decision of African Heads of State and Governments on 1 July 2011, during the Summit of the African Union in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, to support a Resolution of the 66th ordinary session of the General Assembly of the United Nations for a worldwide ban on FGM, the Declaration urges the African Group at the United Nations to take all steps necessary to implement the African Union’s Decision, in order to ensure that a worldwide ban on female genital mutilation becomes a reality that will reinforce political will and engagement at the highest levels to eliminate this violation of the rights of women and girls.
