Gaza: Sisters at Risk After Return to Father

Gaza authorities should urgently ensure the safety and freedom of two adult sisters reported to be in forced confinement at the hands of their father and at risk of serious harm since their forcible return a month ago, Human Rights Watch said today. The two women, Wissam al-Tawil, 23, and Fatma al-Tawil, 19, have previously said that they escaped their father several times, including as recently as September 2022, and they reported their abuse to the authorities, human rights organizations, and on social media.
Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women Opens Eighty-Fourth Session

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women this morning opened its eighty-fourth session, hearing a statement from Andrea Ori, Chief of the Groups in Focus Section, Human Rights Treaties Branch, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and adopting its agenda for the session, during which it will review the reports of Bahrain, Costa Rica, Georgia, Hungary, Mauritania, Norway, Slovenia, and Tunisia.
Women in Wales ‘decades away from equality – Chwarae Teg

Women in Wales remain decades away from achieving equality, says the gender equality group Chwarae Teg. It has also produced a five-year review which paints a picture of little or no progress in improving pay, rights to work and safety in society. Despite a slight pay increase for women since the original 2019 report, it says Wales’ gender pay gap remains 11.3%.

While progress has been made—girls today are a third less likely to undergo the harmful practice than 30 years ago—there’s much more to be done. Iraqis protest over killing of YouTube star by her father

Iraqis are protesting to demand a law against domestic violence, days after a YouTuber was strangled by her father in a killing that sparked outrage. Tiba al-Ali, 22, was killed by her father on January 31 in the southern province of Diwaniyah, Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan said, adding there had been an attempt to mediate between the young woman and her relatives to resolve a “family dispute”.
