First edition of the “No Peace Without Justice Human Rights Award”

In any part of the world, campaigns for the protection and promotion of human rights are an essential segment of the broader struggle for the affirmation of the rule of law, because democracy cannnot exist without rights.

No Peace Without Justice has therefore decided to establish the “No Peace Without Justice Award” to encourage and support those who, with great dedication and courage and often at the risk of their own life, are fighting to conquer those essential rights of citizenship. It will be awarded in two categories: one for activities carried out in Italy and one for activities carried out at the international level.

The award ceremony will take place on 3 March 2014, at 9:30 am, in Rome, at the Sala Zuccari of the Italian Senate of the Republic, in the presence of the Vice-President of the Senate, Valeria Fedeli, the former Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice, Emma Bonino and Annamaria Cancellieri, the Chairman of the Extraordinary Commission for the protection and Promotion of Human Rights of the Senate, Luigi Manconi, and members of the Jury who selected the laureates to be awarded. Members of the Jury included the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, the President of the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights, Gianludovico de Martino di Montegiordano, the Secretary of the Italian Radicals, Rita Bernardini, and the Chairman of the Convention People’s Party of Ghana, Samia Nkrumah.

Following the ceremony, a press conference will be held at 15:30 at NPWJ headquarter, Via di Torre Argentina 76, with the President of the Senate of the Radical Party, Marco Pannella, the Secretary-General of No Peace Without Justice, Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, and the winners of the Prize.
