Restoring Dignity and Justice: A Commitment to Support Victims of Torture

Brussels-Rome, 26 June 2023

On the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, NPWJ stands firmly in solidarity with victims around the world of this egregious violation of human rights, dignity, and the principles of justice. It is a practice that leaves indelible physical, psychological, and emotional scars on its victims. This day also marks the moment in 1987 when the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, one of the key instruments in fighting torture, came into effect.

This day is a significant signal that we all have a responsibility to fight against torture in all its manifestations as well as to provide active assistance to its victims. Their tenacity, bravery, and fortitude in the face of unfathomable adversity motivate us to fight for justice and reparation. We must pay attention to their narratives, acknowledge their suffering to offer them the adequate help, treatment, and support they need to reclaim their lives.

Our programs encompass a range of initiatives, including advocacy for the recognition and implementation of international standards and legal frameworks that protect and support victims of torture. We collaborate with governments, civil society organizations, and international bodies to develop policies and legislation that ensure the prevention of torture, the prosecution of perpetrators, and the full rehabilitation of survivors.

We understand that the journey towards recovery is complex and unique to each individual. It requires a network of dedicated professionals, volunteers, and communities working together to provide sustained support. Through partnerships and capacity-building initiatives, we aim to strengthen local organizations and empower communities to take an active role in the support and protection of victims of torture.

As we observe the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, let us unite in our efforts to call for the implementation of robust legal frameworks, the strengthening of institutions, and the promotion of education and awareness to prevent and eliminate torture.

We call upon all States, governments and relevant institutions to renew their commitment to eradicating this grave violation of human rights, and to work towards a future where every individual lives free from the fear of torture and enjoys their inherent rights and freedoms.
