Tripoli, Libya, 3 October 2012

No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) held a half-day open discussion session with the representatives of civil society organizations from Tripoli and Misurata on Wednesday, 3 October 2012.

The meeting came in the aftermath of the Regional strategy meetings held in Tripoli, Benghazi and Misurata in early September and aimed at sharing ideas on further actions on transitional justice outreach, campaign and advocacy and building an action plan towards national consultation meeting on Transitional Justice. During the meeting the participant discussed the possibility of future capacity building workshops/trainings, along with the producing of joint advocacy materials, including brochures and leaflets. The meeting has been also the occasion for the expansion of the Steering Committee membership with new representatives from both Tripoli and Misurata.

NPWJ has been working on the Libyan transition since early 2011, with its program entitled “Supporting Libya’s Democratic Transition through Justice and Accountability.” On the civil society side, NPWJ program objective is to help build and reinforce capacity of Libyan actors to play their role in incorporating accountability, human rights and the rule of law in the democracy transition and post-conflict reconstruction of their country. To that end, NPWJ is working together with Libyan civil society and human rights activists’ to build their knowledge and capacity in addressing transitional justice and to work on accountability processes and to assist the Libyan authorities with their transitional justice work, including the investigation and prosecution of crimes under international law and massive human rights violations.
