Visit to Brussels of Agnès Callamard, United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and Hatice Cengiz, fiancée of Jamal Khashoggi

On 3 December 2019, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Agnès Callamard will visit Brussels to hold a series of meetings with EU decision makers to update them about her work. She will be accompanied by Hatice Cengiz, fiancée of the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The UN Expert will discuss her investigation into the unlawful death of Mr. Jamal Khashoggi and follow up activities to ensure accountability. Other topics on which she might also focus include: The repatriation of so-called ISIL foreign fighters’ and the question of accountability and justice for ISIL crimes; Protection concerns of so-called “ISIL children”, and their mothers; The situation in Iraq, including prisons and justice; The death of Egyptian ex-President Morsi and prisons conditions in Egypt; The protection of the right to life of migrants and refugees in Europe and Libya; The findings of her recent mission to Nigeria.

The program of the Brussels visit includes a Press Conference at Press Club Brussels Europe (Conference hall, Rue Froissart 95 – 1040 Brussels) at 11am-1pm (with as panellists Agnès Callamard, Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Birgit Van Hout, Regional Representative for Europe, UN Human Rights (OHCHR), Moderator; Hatice Cengiz, Fiancée, Jamal Khashoggi) and an exchange of views in the framework of the Sub-Committee of Human Rights (DROI) of the European Parliament at 14:30-16:00.
