Tripoli, 8 November 2012

With the occasion of producing jointly a brochure on the Basic Assumptions of Transitional Justice, members of the Informal Steering Committee on Transitional Justice came together on 8 November 2012 at No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) premises.

The representatives of civil society organizations finalized the draft with their inputs and comments. They discussed further outreach activities dedicated to specific groups in Libya including youth, women and martyr’s mothers.

The brochure presents the basics of Transitional Justice including its definition, potential goals, mechanisms, processes and stakeholders with clear examples. It was agreed in earlier coordination meetings that the brochure would serve as a tool to raise awareness and contribute to the debates around transitional justice in Libya. Moreover, the Voice of Libyan Women and Phoenix (members of the Informal Steering Committee) gave a brief on their proposals on transitional justice and welcomed the other members of the Steering Committee to work together on joint action.

NPWJ is engaging civil society in Libya, from across the country, partnering with a wide range of organizations. An informal Steering Committee, comprised of a diverse range of Libyan civil society, including NGOs, academics, lawyers and media, public authorities and opinion-leaders has been created On 24-25 April 2012, with an inaugural meeting that took place in Tripoli. The role of the informal Steering Committee is to bring their members and constituencies into the work on transitional justice in Libya and to ensure that the project develops ina way that is beneficial and appropriate for the Libyan context.
