Wildfires, logging turn protected forests into carbon emitters -report

Some of the world's most protected forests are emitting more carbon than they absorb, driven by things like logging and wildfires, a new report said on Wednesday, with researchers alarmed that protected areas are contributing to climate change. At least 10 forests designated World Heritage sites - including Yosemite National Park in the United States - have been net carbon emitters over the last two decades, the report said.

Arctic ground ‘literally collapsing’ amid abrupt thaw

Scientists are increasingly warning that the melting Arctic could push the planet into a vicious cycle of uncontrolled heating as vast stores of carbon in thawing ground release powerful greenhouse gases. For thousands of years, permafrost – ground that is frozen for two or more years in a row – has kept dead plant and animal matter locked in the deep-freeze beneath the tundra. These ancient remnants total up to an estimated 1,600 billion tonnes of organic carbon, almost twice as much as currently found in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Climate change to displace tens of millions of East Africans by 2050 -World Bank

Climate change will force tens of millions of East Africans to abandon their homes within the next three decades, even if schemes to reduce its impact on the region are rolled out, the World Bank said on Wednesday. People affected will include drought-stricken farmers seeking new arable land or different work in urban areas, and others driven out by the need to find clean water, the Bank said in a report issued four days before the U.N. COP26 climate summit begins in Glasgow.

Oil Executives to Face Congress on Climate Disinformation

Executives of some of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies — Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP and Shell — are set to appear before a congressional committee Thursday to address accusations that the industry spent millions of dollars to wage a decades-long disinformation campaign to cast doubt on the science of climate change and to derail action to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels.

‘Vague’ net zero promises not enough: planet still on track for catastrophic heating, UN report warns

Tuesday’s new Emissions Gap Report shows that updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) - the efforts by each country to reduce national emissions, as well as other commitments made for 2030 but not yet officially submitted - would only lead to an additional 7.5 per cent reduction in annual greenhouse emissions in 2030, compared to previous commitments.

General Assembly debate underscores need to deliver on climate action

The UN and its General Assembly, where all 193 Member States are represented, were created so that countries could unite to address common crises such as climate change, Secretary-General António Guterres told the meeting. “The time has passed for diplomatic niceties,” the UN chief said. “If governments - especially G20 governments - do not stand up and lead this effort, we are headed for terrible human suffering.”
